The Northgate Group The Northgate Group, founded in 1947, has as its main objective providing support for the Marin Art and Garden Center, primarily through the operation of Laurel House. But originally the sale of donated antiques and collectibles was simply an added feature of the Summer Luncheon series, another way to raise money. (See our History Section.) Over the years that followed, Laurel House expanded with the sale of consigned merchandise and became the main project of The Northgate Group and one of the major attractions for visitors to the Marin Art and Garden Center.Laurel House has a small paid staff and most of the women you will see there -- the salespeople and pricers - are members of The Northgate Group. As part of their membership they are committed to spend a certain number of hours each year in the shop and in other Northgate activities. The popular Saturday Patio Sales take place throughout the year. These sales usually feature Victorian, Art Deco, Asian and vintage items that can include jewelry, china, glassware, silver, artwork, crystal, dish sets, figurines, lamps, some furniture and other collectibles. Items sold are expired consignments that have become the property of Laurel House and donations from Northgate members and the community. Currently The Northgate Group has 182 members and is governed by a board of directors elected by the members. Membership is by invitation, with current members sponsoring prospective new members.
